About Us
A network of scientists, growers, and artisans
Our Story
The Sri Lanka Network for Bamboo and Rattan (SRINBAR) was established in 2005 by a multidisciplinary group of professionals who shared a common interest in the potential of bamboo and rattan in Sri Lanka.
Bringing together expertise from research, plant science, forestry, agriculture, engineering and construction, SRINBAR created a platform to connect knowledge with practical application—from cultivating and propagating bamboo to exploring its use in construction, energy, industry and beyond.
In its early years, the network organised seminars, shared research and technical knowledge, and advocated for greater awareness and development of bamboo and rattan. Early initiatives included Bamboo the Green Gold and Current Issues in Bamboo, alongside the publication of SRINBAR newsletters.
Following a period of reduced activity, SRINBAR was revived around 2021, bringing its earlier knowledge and experience into a new chapter.
Today, SRINBAR is once again building connections between people, research, policy and industry to help realise the potential of bamboo and rattan in Sri Lanka.
