Growing a Greener Lanka

SRINBAR works towards an enabling environment for the development of bamboo and rattan in Sri Lanka.

This includes engagement with policymakers and public institutions, addressing regulatory barriers and encouraging stronger institutional coordination for the sector.

Recent work has included engagement relating to regulations affecting bamboo transportation, while SRINBAR's current direction includes advocacy for a dedicated institutional mechanism for coordinating the development of the bamboo sector.

SRINBAR seeks to strengthen connections between universities, researchers, students and practitioners.

Its activities include lectures, professional knowledge exchange and the promotion of research and technical education relating to bamboo and rattan.

The network is also exploring opportunities for a student chapter, providing a platform through which younger researchers and professionals can participate in the sector.

A viable bamboo and rattan sector requires both a sustainable resource base and demand for what it produces.

SRINBAR therefore seeks to encourage cultivation while supporting product development, quality improvement, innovation, entrepreneurship and market access.

This includes engagement with craftspeople, businesses, growers and professionals working to develop new applications for bamboo and rattan.

SRINBAR uses events, lectures, publications and communication to increase awareness and connect people working across the sector.
